What Is Self Care?

3 Minutes Read

self care I am so glad you asked! Self care is so many things! Self care is: saying no, exercising, asking for help, saying “I am sorry”, meditating, getting enough rest, forgiving yourself, eating healthy foods, being vulnerable, learning about yourself, making mistakes, letting go, healing old wounds, going to the doctor, taking a break, knowing what you need, taking deep cleansing breaths, having fun, willingness to change and grow, having sex, finding solutions.

What You Can Do To Include Self Care In Your Daily Life

Make It a Habit

Self care is most effective when practiced regularly.

It needs to become habitual so that it helps in hard times. Consistent self care reduces stress, panic, illness and depression.

The key is to find what works for you.

We are more likely to follow through with things that we enjoy or find helpful. We live in a “quick fix” culture. If you reach for a prescription without self care, it gets harder before it gets easier.

If something on the list seems difficult or impossible, you may need some guidance.

It is unreasonable for you to know how to do all these things with ease. It’s also important to have support when you are changing up your habits. It’s tempting to give up when we don’t get immediate results or feel defeated.

Are You a Priority?

I was offered the opportunity take better care of myself when I developed a chronic, debilitating illness.

This illness has persisted for the past 9 years.

My survival and happiness have only been ensured by taking excellent care of myself. When I am slacking on self care, it’s because I am prioritizing productivity over peace.

In the past, I prioritized pleasing others over taking care of myself. This was especially true at work.

  • What are the things that get in your way?
  • Are you willing to shift your priorities?
  • Are you willing to let go of someone else’s needs in exchange for your own?

There are many more things that could be added to this list.

I would LOVE IT if you left a comment with your favorite form of self care.
