What You Can Do To Create Work-Life Balance

Work-Life Balance Tip #1   Know How to Overcome Your Seductress

What are the things that steal your time?

For most of us, it is some form of “screen time”. It may be a computer, a mobile device or TV. They all create the same problem if your life lacks balance. If your seductress isn’t screen time, figure out what tempts you away from self-care. Most of us want to distract our minds.

Funny YouTube videos create an instant dopamine dump in the brain. It feels instantly good. The downside is it tells your brain that it needs instant gratification rather than doing something that promotes connection with others or longer-term satisfaction.  To overcome your seductress, you need replacement activities. Things you wish you had time for. Will you recommit to doing things that you love but seem to have lost time for?

Stephen R Covey's inspirational work-life balance quote describes this struggle so beautifully!

"Most of us spend too much time on what is urgent and not enough time on what is important." ~Stephen R Covey

Work-Life Balance Tip #2   Take Fear Out of the Equation.

Fear is the feeling that says "if you don’t do it; you won’t have enough money, you might miss out on something, you may disappoint someone".

If you are making fear-based decisions about time, you are out of balance!

What do you think about Marissa Mayer's wise work-life balance quote below? True?

"Burnout is about resentment. Preventing it is about knowing yourself well enough to know what it is you're giving up that makes you resentful." ~Marissa Mayer

Work Life Balance Tip #3   Reprioritize

If you are feeling overwhelmed with life, it probably means you have taken on too much in your mind.

When I feel like I can’t get it all done in time, I know I have decided to do more than is reasonable. In those moments, I make a new choice to keep it simple. I cut out anything that isn’t absolutely necessary. Most importantly, I allow myself to let go of the obsessive need to do it all immediately. The key is understanding the difference between what is necessary and what we THINK is necessary.

Dolly Parton's work life balance quote, simple and to the point!

"Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life." ~Dolly Parton

Work Life Balance Tip #4   Always Do Your Best.

Don Miguel Ruiz and his book The Four Agreements have become popular in the self-help section.

One of the agreements states always does your best. What always sticks with me is his reminder that taking care of ourselves is part of doing our best. That means evaluating if you are doing your best in all areas of your life, not just work! How do you score in personal time, relationships, fun, and self-care?

It's exactly how Michelle Obama describes it in her work-life balance quote, only when we put ourselves first, we can help others. If we are struggling, we cannot help anybody.

"We need to do a better job of putting ourselves higher on our own 'to do' list." ~Michelle Obama

Work Life Balance Tip #5   Get Creative!

Learn new ways to incorporate the things that are important to you.

Listen to that book you want to read on your drive to work. Take a bath and listen to meditation instead of rushing through the shower. Use a workout plan like to incorporate exercise if you are a busy parent. If you have a habit of overworking, pick one creative or fun thing (go fishing, watch the sunset at the beach, take a walk in a nearby park, go out with friends) this week and experience how it can help you to feel more at ease AND productive!

I know, this work life balance quote from Alexander Kjerulf is not easy to believe but the truth. When we are happy, everything will fall into place!

"Most people chase success at work, thinking that will make them happy. The truth is that happiness at work will make you successful." ~Alexander Kjerulf

Work-life balance is an art and it takes conscious decision making. There are times in our lives that we may need to let certain things go in order to have more balance and peace. I love to travel and in the last 2 years of my life, I haven’t done as much traveling because I was pregnant/had a new baby. Now that we have adjusted, we are finding the time and space to do more traveling. The moment you stop doing what you love, you will stop loving what you do.
